Le mystérieux Paraśurāma de Mahasthan

International audienceMahasthan is an archaeological site in North Bengal, nowadays Bangladesh, that has been identified with ancient Puṇḍranagara. The city has been founded in the 4th century BCE and has been inhabited at least until the 14th century CE. Excavations have been conducted for more than a century and, since 1993, a French archaeological team is leading new investigations. Local legends tell that the last Hindu king before the arrival of Islam was a so-called Paraśurāma, who is totally unknown from any historical source. At the same time, the place is still known as a Hindu tīrtha, or pilgrimage place which is epitomized in a Sanskrit text, the Karatoyā Māhātmya, that presents Paraśurāma as the main local deity. A study of this māhātmya, along with the reappraisal of archaeological informations and comparison with other texts, such as the more famous Rāmacarita lead the author to postulate that the two Paraśurāma are one and the same and may coincide with Rāmapāla, one of the last great kings of the Pāla dynasty. Les légendes locales racontent que le dernier roi hindou avant l'arrivée de l'Islam était un certain Paraśurāma, qui est par ailleurs totalement inconnu des sources historiques. En même temps, le site reste célèbre comme un tīrtha hindou, ou un lieu de pèlerinage chanté par un texte sanskrit, le Karatoyā Māhātmya, qui présente Paraśurāma comme la principale divinité locale. Une étude de ce māhātmya, mis en relation avec le matériel archéologique et d'autres textes, tel que le célèbre Rāmacarita, amène à postuler que les deux Paraśurāma ne font qu'un et pourrait correspondre avec Rāmapāla, un des derniers souverains de la dynastie Pāla. Par conséquent, Mahasthan pourrait aussi être identifié à Rāmavatī
