International audienceThe article attempts to reconstruct one of the possible genealogies of political relations between nation-building and territory in a peripheral colonial context, in Latin America. We proceed by a diachronic analysis of territorial narratives developed in the case of the Maya people of Belize (formerly British Honduras), by themselves and by successive governments around the figure of “Indian reservations”. As areas assigned to a specific ethnic group, the reservations in Belize can only be tackled in their founding ambivalence.
