Territory as a legible result of complex processes and a resource for action (Debate paper)

Founding document for the creation of the territorial sciencesSeveral signs indicate that territories have been a succesful theme in social sciences since the 1980s. It is being used in different disciplines, each adopting its own definition of the term.This success can be explained by its "inclusive" quality. However, is it possible to answer the question of whether territorial sciences are a science, an interdisciplinary field or simply scientific knowledge? This text, foreword to the fouding conference of the International College of Territorial Sciences (CIST) in November 2011, aims at opening up perspectives to respon to the contemporary challenges that new scientific paradigms attempt to tackle and resolve.Plusieurs signes attestent le succès du thème des territoires dans les sciences sociales depuis les années 1980. Plusieurs disciplines l'utilisent, tout en adoptant une définition spécifique du terme. Ce succès peut s'expliquer par la qualité "intégratrice" du territoire. Pour autant, les sciences du territoire sont-elles une science, un champ interdisciplinaire ou un simple savoir scientifique ?
