International audienceThis paper shows the diversity of non-monetary remuneration among various self-employed occupations in the world of art: Ceramic artists, but also other craftspeople. The relative economic insecurity they are faced with goes along with a search for happiness at work that partly ignores monetary profits. Reducing this phenomenon to a denial of economic matters and a vocational illusio seems inadequate to explain the “twofold truth”—objective and subjective—of work for these self-employed workers. In this paper, we take into account the meaning of work among these workers to show that they actually conceive of work rewards in every sense of the term.
