International audienceIn this paper, we attempt to clarify the potential relation between linguistics and translation theory by articulating three kinds of considerations: purely theoretical reflections about the two disciplines, general reflections emerging from practice, and finally some observations on actual practice, based on a short text by Freud in German, translated into English and into French. Theoretical options and practical choices regarding all these aspects can have major consequences on the reality of this relation, which is accordingly variable.
