Noens et al., 2005 proposed a possible functional relationship between SsgA-like proteins (SALPs) in Streptomyces coelicolor and penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and autolysins in terms of their role in peptidoglycan synthesis. This project preliminarily investigates several PBPs and autolysins with the ultimate long-term goal of correlating their function to the SALP, SsgB. Mutants have been made for two relevant genes and we are still in the process of making mutants for two others. Preliminary phenotyping has been done with mutant candidates. Ultimately, this work provides evidence to continue to investigate the function of these PBPs and autolysins through mutational analysis to hopefully correlate them to SsgB and other SALPs
