Review Of Elk: Behavior, Ecology, Conservation By E. A. Bauer

This work is more than a coffee-table book but considerably less than a serious review of scientific literature on elk. The Bauers have selected more than 150 excellent color photographs, most printed full-page size or larger, at high resolution on glossy paper. The photos are accompanied by the authors\u27 personal observations on these animals spanning 30 years, primarily in Yellowstone National Park. Topics covered include seasonal distribution and behavior of these large deer, the management practices of the Park and adjacent regions, and a plea for more enlightened conservation practices. There is a short index and a few suggested readings but no bibliography. The photographs are exceptional and dramatic and the narrative gripping and often informative, but there is no presentation of quantitative data or any discussion of the complex ecological issues involved in wildlife management.
