Abstract Specificity of Escherichia coli σ70-promoter consensus-like sequences in both transcribed and non-transcribed strands of 75 transcription units has been examined by the χ2-statistics. Occurrences of highly conserved sequences to the consensus for about four-fifths of the units in E.coli genome involving an of the polycistronic transcription units are repressed in both strands. These evidences suggest that the initiation sites of most of the transcription units in E.coli genome are regulated with the consensus-like sequence
