Generalised thermoelasticity theories are employed to study one-dimensional disturbances in a half-space due to a thermal impulse on the boundary. Short time approximation of solutions are deduced and the exact discontinuities in the mechanical and thermal fields are analysed using the Laplace transform technique. © 1980 Indian Academy of Sciences
