A study of selected models to determine elementary teacher propensity to strike.

Five explanatory models, related to demographics, attitudes, personality, work environment, and burnout were examined to determine which best predicted elementary teacher propensity to strike. Test instruments included: (i) a questionnaire, designed by the researcher, to measure demographics, attitudes, and work environment; (ii) Holland\u27s Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI); and (iii) Maslach\u27s Burnout Inventory (MBI). The instruments were administered in June, 1996 to educators (N = 202) in an urban elementary public school board. The work environment model emerged as the best predictor. Variables which correlated with propensity to strike included dissatisfaction with monetary benefits, the classroom environment, and professional support. Significant variables also emerged in the demography, personality, and attitude models pointing to support of a combination of factors in determining propensity to strike. Burnout was not found to be a predictor. An emerging framework for understanding the determinants of striking is proposed.
