The growth of cognitive behavioural techniques in therapy seems to have outstripped the development of suitable assessment techniques to aid in the practice of that therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and validate the YIPTIS (Your Irrational Personality Trait Inventory Score) test, developed by Maultsby (1980) for use in his self-help therapy. A more general goal was to develop a scale suitable for three important applications: the assessment of irrational thinking, the facilitation of therapy aimed at cognitive restructuring, and research into methods of cognitive change.
