The use of functional programming languages in two-dimensional graphics

Functional Programming languages have started to gain popularity in the last few years owing to the advantages that are inherent to this style of programming. So far they are in the experimental stage, and they are not widely accepted for mainstream applications. The question that is addressed here, is how functional languages may be of value when writing programs that perform graphics applications and in particular, two-dimensional graphics. For that purpose three applications areas involving two-dimensional graphics are being investigated in this work.
