Competitive strategy and business performance in the U.S. upholstered, wood household furniture industry

Over the past few years, the upholstered, wood household furniture industry in the United States has experienced increased competition from other countries, especially from Asian countries. Imports of upholstered furniture have been growing at a rapid rate and are considered by some to represent a serious threat to the continued production of upholstered furniture in the United States. This study was conducted to help understand competitive issues in the industry, such as the relationships among competitive business-level strategy, industry competitive forces, and business performance. Additionally, this study will aid in the development of business-level strategies for the long-term financial success of U.S. firms. This study has identified information about the methodology for assessing a firm\u27s financial performance as a function of its competitive position within the industry. It was found that competitive success and financial performance is related in many ways to business-level strategies. The threat of new entrants was somewhat ignored by managers in this industry when they formulated and implemented competitive business-level strategies for firm-level performance. How to defend against the threat of new entrants for the firm\u27s best performance will be an important and serious task for this industry in the future
