In vitro antimicrobial activity of extract from dissotis brazzae.

Antimicrobial screening against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as pathogenic fungi, with emphasis on best solvent for extraction was carried out from extracts prepared from Dissotis brazzae leaves. Sequential extraction was done by using solvents in the following order first Dichloromethane, Ethylacatate, 30% Ethanol and water. The medicinal plants were extracted and tested for in vitro antimicrobial activity against the following bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholera, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and in vitro anti fungi activity on the following fungi Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Out of 4. Extracts, Dichloromethane and Ethylacatate extract were the most active- were active against S. aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Vibrio cholera while 80%Ethanol extract I showed activity against V. cholera and bacillus cereus and water extract showed l no activity. All extract showed no activity against c. Albicans and c. Neoformans. All four extracts were safe with Lc50>5Ong/ml
