Antimicrobial activity of non antibibiotics; non steroidal anti inflamatory agents and anthelminthics.

AIM: The objective of this study was to screen antimicrobial activities of non antibiotic drugs. The assayed drugs involved were non-steroidal anti inflammatory agents (aspirin, ibuprofen and diclofenac) and anthelminthics (suramin, praziquantel and albendazole). METHODS AND RESULTS: Susceptibility tests were performed against different species of bacteria (Pseudomonas spp, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp) a11d fungi (Candida albicans) by disc diffusion method. Results show that all bacteria and fungi are susceptible to non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents but none are susceptible to anthelminthics. CONCLUSION: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac) manifested better antimicrobial activity compared to the well known and medically used antibiotics such as cloxacillin and Chloramphenical in Pseudomonas aureginosa. On the other hand anthelminthics have no any microbial activity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The present actions of Non- steroidal anti—inflammatory agents (aspirin, ibuprofen and diclofenac) on microbes indicate their future prospect as antimicrobial agents against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aureginosa and E. coli. However in view of anti-inflammatory properties of these drugs, their antimicrobial action may provide an additional advantage for their use
