Background: Globally 33.3 million people were estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS at the end of the year 2009 compared to 33.4 million at the end of the year 2008. Sub Saharan Africa continues to bear the greatest share in global burden of HIV/AIDS, even though the rates of new HIV infections are declining, the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS keeps on rising. As a result of increasing awareness and utilization of HIV related care the prevalence of HIV has declined since the year 2000 but has stabilized in East African countries.
