The reinvention of self: the unfolding phenomenon mnemonic in the Dois irmãos and O Vale da Paixão

This Masters Thesis analyzes the formation of the identities of the narrator protagonists of the novels The Brothers (2000), by Milton Hatoum, and The Painter of Birds (1998), by Lidia Jorge. They are Nael and Walter Dias daughter, respectively. Narrators use memory as the main instrument to (re)construct identities silenced and excluded from the familiar narrative. Then, they strive in a narrative work of retrospection, mobilizing memories and negotiating several voices in their speeches. For this investigation it was necessary, therefore, perform a preliminary discussion about the theoretical aspects that structure this research, starting from an anthropological and sociological theoretical contribution. Thus, it was delimited the notion of identity and then it was analyzed the mnemonic phenomenon, key concepts that become work definitions. Then, it was observed how memory is manipulated by the narrators: how they present their memories and use other memories to compose the speech and history itself. Forward, it was verified how memory and identity relate under the theoretical point of view, noticing that this connection is realized by means of narration, analyzed in the last part of the research. The study allows the conclusion that memory is an essential source for identity formation because it allows the subject to narrate his own story attributing new meanings to experiences, which supports a new identity configuration.Esta Dissertação de Mestrado analisa a formação das identidades dos narradores protagonistas dos romances Dois irmãos (2000), de Milton Hatoum, e O Vale da Paixão (1998), de Lídia Jorge. São eles Nael e a filha de Walter Dias, respectivamente. Os narradores se servem da memória como instrumento principal para (re)construir identidades silenciadas e excluídas da narrativa familiar. Empenham-se, então, em um trabalho narrativo de retrospecção, mobilizando memórias e agenciando diversas vozes em seus discursos. Para esta investigação fez-se necessário, portanto, realizar uma discussão prévia acerca dos aspectos teóricos que estruturam a pesquisa, partindo-se de um aporte teórico antropológico e sociológico. Sendo assim, delimitou-se a noção de identidade e em seguida analisou-se o fenômeno mnemômico, conceitos chave que se tornam definições de trabalho. Em seguida, foi observada como a memória é manipulada pelos narradores: como apresentam as suas memórias e como utilizam outras memórias para compor o próprio discurso e a própria história. Adiante, verificou-se como se relacionam memória e identidade sob o ponto de vista teórico, percebendo-se que essa ligação se realiza por meio da narração, analisada na última parte da pesquisa. O estudo permite concluir que a memória é uma fonte incontornável para a formação identitária, pois possibilita que o sujeito narre a própria história atribuindo novos significados às experiências vividas, o que dá suporte a uma nova configuração identitária
