Alterations in the physiological quality of tomato plant seeds exposed to nitrate and sodium nitride

The productivity of the cultures is greatly determined by the interaction between the metabolism of carbon and nitrogen. These two processes are straightly connected, once the necessary energy for the nitrogen assimilation comes directly or indirectly from the photosynthesis. The diverse agricultural and industrial activities contribute to the conversion of nitrate into nitride, causing toxicity to the environment, and, as a consequence, accumulation in the soil. Therefore, this work has as objective evaluate and describe the alterations in the physiological quality of the seed, and the characteristics of tomato plants growth when exposed to growing concentrations of nitrate and sodium nitride. Cv. Gaúcho tomato seeds, harvest of 2002, were submitted to nitrate and sodium nitride solutions with different concentrations (zero; 100; 200; 300 and 400mg Kg -1 ). Afterwards the seeds were submitted to the following analysis: germination test, first germination counting, germination speed index, plantule emergence in green house, emergence speed index, length of the shoot and root, fresh mass and dry of the shoot and root, electrical conductivity, chlorophyll total content and of carotenoids and leaf area. Based on the results we can conclude that the viability and the vigor of the seed are positively affected by the sodium nitrate . On the other hand, the sodium nitride negatively affects the viability, but it does not seem to have effect on the vigor of the tomato plant seeds.A produtividade das culturas é grandemente determinada pela interação entre o metabolismo do carbono e do nitrogênio. Esses dois processos estão estreitamente interligados, uma vez que a energia necessária para a assimilação do nitrogênio deriva direta ou indiretamente da fotossíntese. As diversas atividades agrícolas e industriais contribuem para a conversão do nitrato a nitrito, ocasionando toxicidade ao meio ambiente e, como conseqüência, acúmulo no solo. Portanto, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar e descrever as alterações na qualidade fisiológica da semente e características do crescimento da planta de tomateiro, quando expostas a concentrações crescentes do nitrato e nitrito de sódio. Sementes de tomateiro cv. Gaúcho, safra 2002, foram submetidas às soluções de nitrato e nitrito de sódio, com diferentes concentrações (zero; 100; 200; 300 e 400mg Kg -1 ). A seguir, as sementes foram submetidas às seguintes análises: teste de germinação, primeira contagem da germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, emergência das plântulas em casa de vegetação, índice de velocidade de emergência, comprimento da parte aérea e da raiz, massa fresca e seca da parte aérea e da raiz, condutividade elétrica, teores de clorofila total e de carotenóides e área foliar. Com base nos resultados podemos concluir que a viabilidade e o vigor das sementes são positivamente afetados pelos níveis de nitrato de sódio. Por outro lado, o nitrito de sódio afeta negativamente a viabilidade, mas parece não ter efeito sobre o vigor das sementes de tomateiro
