The aim of the paper is to show the importance of metaphors in foreign language teaching. Metaphors, however, are not treated as purely linguistic phenomena but rather as conceptual processes (conceptual metaphor) affecting our reception and organization of the reality, and thus determining human behaviour. Metaphors which influence our understanding of language, communication, and the very process of language learning are to be discussed. The author will also mention those metaphors that hinder the learning process and those that can be used by teachers to improve their relations with students and motivate them to learn.
