Includes bibliographical references (pages 40-41)This thesis represents the first paper generated by the system for electron stimulated desorption (ESD) established at Northern Illinois University. Its major goals are (1) to verify the proper operation of the system and (2) to investigate the interaction of oxygen and ethylene on the surface of a nickel-copper alloy. Evidence is presented that confirms the system's operation. Also presented are the results of the ESD of oxygen and ethylene from a nickel-copper surface. It was observed that ethylene, either alone or coadsorbed with oxygen, had very little effect on desorption as compared to the clean surface.
