Moral education for secondary education in the twenty-first century : an analysis of the educational philosophy of David Purpel

Includes bibliographical references (pages [78]-80).This thesis is an analysis of the response by Purpel in his book, The Moral & Spiritual Crisis in Education: a Curriculum for Justice & Compassion in Education, to the current debates and proposals for educational reform. David Purpel's work was published as part of an educational series entitled Critical Studies in Education Series. He believes America should place greater emphasis on a "moral" education. Public schools should play a role in development of moral and ethical behavior. Purpel proposes bringing together the great religious principles of the world in order to establish a virtuous school system. Other educational experts will challenge Purpel's ideas on several key issues that are interpreted as related to the topics. The recommendations are dedicated to aiding the growth of the total individual-physically, mentally, and spiritually. This nation needs a comprehensive plan to motivate young people to enjoy their search for knowledge, to understand their interaction with fellow human beings, and to proceed without fear and prejudice to exploring the adult world. It is to induce them to take pride in self-improvement in every respect, and to be equally concerned with the teamwork approach to solving problems of the society at large.
