Includes bibliographical references. The extent to which illustrations influence the representation of text information in memory was examined. Participants either read passages in which target sentences were or were not embellished with an illustration depicting what the text described. The participants? recognition for the targeted sentences were then tested either immediately following the presentation of the texts or one week later. The results most strongly supported a situational effect, whereby the illustrations enhanced participants? memory for the situation being described in the text more so than for other types of representations.M.A. (Master of Arts
