CTD data down to about 1500m were collected along five transequatorial lines in the western Pacific ocean between December 1981 and November 1983. We described that the general features in the water temperature, salinity and geostrophic current speed sections. The thermal field observed along near 160°E in December 1982 revealed that the depth of thermocline was abnormally shallow, which was associated with the 1982/83 El Nino onset in the eastern Pacific ocean
