Differentiation in the foreign language classroom:teacher perspectives, practices and experiences

Students come in to the foreign language classroom with very different learning profiles, that is, readiness, interests, learning styles, social backgrounds and emotional needs. In order to respond to these differences and needs, and consequently promote students’ growth to their full potential as both human beings and FL users, teachers need to differentiate their teaching. This is also in the requirements of the Finnish Core Curriculum (2004) and the amendments of 2010, as differentiation is an integral means of providing general support for all students. Research has been done on differentiating foreign languages, but there is space for a more encompassing study exploring differentiation in the FL classroom in the comprehensive schooling system in general. This study aims at increasing understanding and knowledge on differentiation in the foreign language classroom as a phenomenon and spread awareness of diverse, fruitful and respectful means of differentiation that FL teachers could apply in their everyday work. In other words, the main question of this study is what should and could differentiation in the FL classroom be like. For the should I turn to theoretical literature while for the could I explore FL teacher perspectives, practices and experiences from my data. The theoretical basis is formed by the synthetized theory and ideology of differentiation as well as theories on individual differences in second/foreign language learning derived from applied linguistics and psychology. For providing a deeper insight into the phenomenon, qualitative phenomenology was chosen as the methodology, and thus, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six comprehensive school English and Swedish teachers about their perspectives, practices and experiences on differentiation. The data was then analyzed using qualitative content and thematic analyses. On the basis of the theory, the shoulds of differentiation in the FL classroom were compiled: it should concern all students, enhance appreciation of diversity, be supportive of students maximum growth and self-beliefs and informed by teacher knowledge on student differences, respond to student differences in readiness, interests, learning profile, personality, social background and emotional and motivational needs, practice weaknesses and capitalize on strengths, provide freedom of choice and be respectful and flexible. On the basis of the data, the coulds were constructed. These coulds show which practices the informants find possible to use in regards to their know how and resources, and perhaps, which practices they deem effective and good. All of the informants differentiated their teaching in several theoretically informed but also innovative ways by utilizing whole-group and individual differentiation: materials, methods, evaluation, the learning environment and flexible grouping. The best practices were books, proactive education, classroom assistants and divided lessons. Differentiating by readiness was the most pronounced orientation in the data, as well as the academic literature. However, it was not the main orientation for two teachers: one emphasized the supporting of students’ self-efficacies and differentiated by learning styles, interests, motivational needs and readiness, while the other highlighted the supporting of students’ emotional needs and differentiating by them as well as interests. Nevertheless, readiness was not seen as a unitary construct by the interviewees, but consisting of several different competencies that vary from one student to another. Motivation enhancing practices were emphasized in the theory, but not in the data, while the theory and the informants were quite unanimous that the existence of individual learning styles could be questioned. In general, the informants of the study could aspire to differentiate more by interest, apply more diverse methods in organization and grouping, allow more variety in products and show that they have high expectations for all their students. Not using some of the practices suggested by the theory can be related to some of the challenges experienced: feelings of inadequacy, and lack of time, resources and knowledge. Some differences between differentiation in English and Swedish were noticed. Also, as classroom teachers know better their students, they might be more apt to teach FLs and differentiate effectively. All in all, the study provides an array of theoretically and practically informed ideas for differentiation in the FL classroom.Oppilaat saapuvat vieraiden kielten opetukseen hyvin erilaisin oppimisprofiilein eli valmiuksin, kiinnostuksin, oppimistyylein, sosiaalisisin taustoin ja emotionaalisin tarpein. Vastatakseen näihin eriäväisyyksiin ja tarpeisiin, ja täten tukeakseen oppilaiden kasvua heidän täyteen potentiaaliinsa sekä ihmisinä että vieraiden kielten käyttäjinä, opettajien tulee eriyttää opetustaan. Tätä vaatii myös perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteet (2004) sekä niihin tehdyt muutokset (2010), sillä eriyttäminen on yksi keskeisimmistä yleisen tuen muodoista kaikille oppilaille. Tutkimusta on tehty vieraiden kielten eriyttämisestä, mutta on vielä tarvetta kattavammalle ja vieraiden kielten eriyttämistä peruskoulussa tutkivalle pro gradulle. Tämä tutkimus siis pyrkii lisäämään ymmärrystä ja tietämystä eriyttämisestä vieraiden kielten opetuksessa ilmiönä sekä levittämään tietoisuutta monipuolisista, tuloksellisista ja oppilaille merkityksellisistä eriyttämisen tavoista, joita vieraiden kielten opettajat voisivat soveltaa jokapäiväisessä työssään. Toisin sanoen, tämän tutkimuksen pääkysymys on millaista vieraiden kielten opetuksen eriyttäminen pitäisi ja voisi olla? Kysymyksen pitäisi-osuuteen etsitään vastauksia akateemisesta kirjallisuudesta ja kysymyksen voisi-osuuteen taas vieraiden kielten opettajien näkemyksistä, käytänteistä ja kokemuksista. Teoreettinen kehys muodostuu eriyttämisen ideologiasta ja syntetisoidusta teoriasta sekä soveltavan kielitieteen ja psykologian teorioista vieraiden/toisten kielten oppimisen yksilöllisistä eroista. Syvemmän ymmärryksen saavuttamiseksi kvalitatiivinen fenomenologia valittiin metodologiseksi lähestymistavaksi ja täten toteutettiin kuusi puolistrukturoitua haastattelua peruskoulun englannin ja ruotsin opettajille heidän käsityksistään, käytänteistään ja kokemuksistaan eriyttämisestä. Aineisto analysoitiin kvalitatiivista sisällönanalyysia ja temaattista analyysia hyödyntäen. Teoreettisen viitekehyksen pohjalta koottiin lista, millaista vieraiden kielten opetuksen eriyttämisen pitäisi olla: sen tulisi kohdistua kaikkiin oppilaisiin, edistää erilaisuuden arvostusta, tukea oppilaiden täyttä kasvua ja minä-pystyvyyttä, perustua opettajan oppilaantuntemukseen, vastata oppilaiden erilaisiin valmiuksiin, kiinnostuksiin, oppimisprofiileihin, persoonallisuuksiin, sosiaalisiin taustoihin ja emotionaalisiin ja motivationaalisiin tarpeisiin, kehittää heikkouksia ja tukeutua vahvuuksiin, tarjota valinnanvapautta ja olla kunnioittavaa ja joustavaa. Aineiston pohjalta pohdittiin, millaista vieraiden kielten opetuksen eriyttäminen voisi olla. Tulokset kertovat, millaisia käytäntöjä tutkittavat pitävät hyvinä ja kokevat pystyvänsä tietotaitojensa ja resurssiensa puitteissa toteuttaa. Kaikki tutkittavat eriyttivät opetustaan monin, teoreettisesti pätevin tavoin hyödyntäen yksilöllisiä ja koko ryhmän eriyttämisen keinoja: materiaaleja, metodeja, arviointia, oppimisympäristöä ja joustavaa ryhmittelyä. Parhaiksi eriyttämisen käytänteiksi mainittiin kirjat, ennakoiva tukiopetus, luokanavustaja ja jakotunnit. Valmiuksien mukaan eriyttäminen painottui kaikkein eniten aineistossa sekä kirjallisuudessa. Se ei kuitenkaan ollut kahden tutkittavan pääorientaatio: toinen painotti oppilaiden minä-pystyvyyden tukemista ja oppimistyylien mukaan eriyttämistä, kun taas toinen korosti oppilaiden emotionaalisiin tarpeisiin vastaamista ja kiinnostuksien mukaan eriyttämistä. Valmiuksia ei kuitenkaan nähty yhtenäisenä käsitteenä, vaan tutkittavien mukaan se muodostuu useammasta eri kompetenssista, jotka vaihtelevat oppilaasta toiseen. Motivaatiota tukevia käytänteitä painotettiin kirjallisuudessa, mutta aineistosta ne eivät nousseet vahvasti esille. Tutkittavat olivat melko yksimielisiä siitä, että oppimistyylien olemassaolo on kyseenalaista. Yleisesti ottaen tutkittavat voisivat pyrkiä eriyttämään enemmän kiinnostuksien mukaan, soveltaa monipuolisempia metodeja ryhmittelyssä ja organisoinnissa, mahdollistaa monipuolisemmat oppimistuotteet ja osoittamaan, että heillä on korkeat odotukset kaikille oppilaille. Se, että joitain teorian suosittelemia käytänteitä ei toteutettu, voi johtua koetuista haasteista: riittämättömyyden tunteista sekä ajan, resurssien ja tiedon puutteesta. Joitain eroja eriyttämisessä englannin ja ruotsin opettajien sekä luokanopettajien ja aineenopettajien välillä voitiin havaita.
