Detection probability of Northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis L.) in Latvia: evaluation of two techniques and analysis of several influencing factors

Darba mērķis ir noskaidrot vistu vanaga teritoriālo saucienu atskaņošanas ietekmi uz sugas ligzdošanas iecirkņu konstatēšanu, to salīdzinot ar Eiropā pieņemto vizuālo uzskaišu metodi un skaidrot konstatējamības izmaiņas saistībā ar attālumu no ligzdas, ligzdošanas stadijām, kalendāro un diennakts laiku. Noskaidrots, ka vistu vanaga konstatēšanas iespējamību ievērojami palielina akustiskā stimulēšana, izmantojot tēviņa teritoriālo saucienu ierakstu. Visās fenoloģiskajās fāzēs, izņemot ligzdu atstājušus mazuļus, konstatēšanas iespējamība ir augstāka izmantojot provocēšanu. Augstākā vistu vanaga konstatēšanas iespējamība ir līdz 200 m attālumam no ligzdas laikā līdz 100 dienai kopš gada sākuma, tas pārklājas ar pirms-ligzdošanas fenoloģisko fāzi. Šajā laikā vanagu ar augstu ticamību iespējams konstatēt visā diennakts gaišajā laikā.The aim of the bachelor theses is to determine how broadcasting the territorial call of the Northern Goshawk impacts the probability to detect the nesting districts of the species. The aim is achieved by comparing the broadcasting territorial call method to the visual survey method which is widely used in Europe, and analyzing the changes/variations in detectionability in relation to distance from the nest, nesting stages, calendar time and the time of the day. The conclusion of the research is that the possibility to detect the Northern Goshawk is highly increased by using acoustic stimulation, using the record of the male territorial call. During all phenological phases, except fledged juvenile birds which have left the nest already, the probability of detection is higher using provocation method. The highest probability to detect the Northern Goshawk is up to 200 meters away from the nest, up to 100 days from the beginning of the year - which is also the time of the year that overlaps with pre-nesting phenological phase. During this time, whole light time of the day can be used in species territory location
