FOREWORD This bibliography lists the publications by the staff and the theses of the students of the University of Oulu in 1998. The following guidelines have been followed in the compilation of the bibliography: 1. The bibliography is based on information provided by the authors. 2. In addition to literary works the bibliography covers electronic publications, computer programs and audiovisual materials, as well. 3. The publications are listed by faculty and department, according to the name of the first author who is either a staff member or a student of the University. The whole of the first name is mentioned if the author is a staff member, only the initial letter of the first name in the case of non-staff members. 4. The bibliography also contains entries that have been published in 1997 but were left out of the previous edition. 5. At the end of the book there is an alphabetical author index covering the staff members and students of the University. 6. An asterisk indicates the publications that the author has grouped according to the Classification Scheme for Scientific Publications (KOTA) published by the Ministry of Education as follows: 1) Finnish and foreign scientific monographs, 2) articles in Finnish or foreign referee journals, 3) articles in Finnish or foreign collected works or printed conference publications, 4) articles and monographs published in the series Acta Universitatis Ouluensis (excluding dissertations). The bibliographical database maintained by the University Library that covers the publications by the staff members of the University of Oulu also contains abstracts, which are not included in the printed version.
