Abstract The aim of this study was to explore child- and parent-related determinants of oral health-related lifestyle and presence of active initial caries lesions among a group of Finnish schoolchildren. The original study population consisted of 5th and 6th graders and their parents in Pori (n = 1691) and in Rauma (n = 821), Finland. Data concerning oral health-related knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors were gathered with questionnaires. In Pori, all children included in the sample were invited to participate in a dental screening performed to find suitable candidates for a randomized clinical trial.
