This research explores problematic aspects of the manifold character of the interpreter’s role and endeavours to find out whether a more strict definition of the interpreter’s role could be possible. It examines various situations that define more or less active role of an interpreter in the communicative process. Since the interpreting process situates an interpreter in between the two participating sides, it assigns to him/her the role of a mediator that has to bridge interlingual as well as intercultural gaps.
