Pragmatics in Teaching English as Foreign Language

Pētnieciskajā darbā tiek pētīta moderna angļu valodas mācību grāmata, analizējot tās saturu no pragmatikas zinātnes viedokļa. Teorētiskajā daļā aplūkota pragmatikas nozare kā praktiskās valodniecības nozīmīga daļa, kā arī pragmatikas kompetence kā viena no komunikatīvās kompetences sastāvdaļām. Dotā pētījuma mērķis ir pierādīt, ka skolēnu kompetenci pragmatikā ir iespējams attīstīt, izmantojot modernu angļu valodas mācību grāmatu. Teorija ar praksi pētījumā tiek sasaistīta, meklējot pragmatikas aspektus saturošas pazīmes mācību grāmatas Rakstu uzdevumu sadaļā, izmantojot Veidlapu ar pārbaudes kritēriju sarakstu. Secinājumi tiek izdarīti, balstoties uz rezultātiem, kas iegūti pētījuma gaitā, izmantojot kritēriju sarakstu, anketu, kā arī kontroldarbu skolēnu pragmatikas aspektu izpratnes pārbaudei. Iegūtie rezultāti liecina, ka pētītās angļu valodas mācību grāmatas saturs ietver pragmatikas pazīmes, bet tās tiek apgūtas netiešā veidā. Šādas mācību grāmatas izmantošana zināmā mērā veicina skolēnu pragmatikas kompetences attīstību lietišķajā sarakstē. Pētījuma rezultātā izdarītie secinājumi varētu tikt izmantoti, lai tālāk veicinātu skolēnu pragmatikas kompetences pilnveidošanos. The theoretical part deals with the concept of pragmatics being the subfield of applied linguistics, and the concept of pragmatic competence being a constituting part of communicative competence. The research paper aims at proving pragmatics is teachable by using a modern EFL text book. It relates the theory examined to practice by a means of applying pragmatic criteria to a modern text book in order to figure out pragmatic features presented in the text book. The scope of research is narrowed by applying the criteria to the Writing section of the text book. The conclusions drawn are based on a case study, during which such research instruments as a checklist, a questionnaire and a students’ skill test were used. The data obtained prove that the EFL text book examined contains a pragmatic input which is acquired implicitly. Besides, the use of a modern text book develops learners’ pragmatic competence in formal writing to a certain extent. The conclusions of this research might be applied to the English language classroom to make the acquisition of pragmatics more efficient.
