A cryogen-free refrigerating preconcentration/thermal desorption device that used a refrigeration compressor as cold source has been developed, optimized and characterized. Only -10 degrees C was needed to trap volatile organic compounds (VOCs) down to C2 in ambient air. The device was applied for the on-line determination of VOCs in ambient air. Carbon molecular sieves TDX-01 and graphitized carbon black were used as adsorbents for enrichment of VOCs at -10 degrees C. The trapped analytes were thermally desorbed, and were directly transferred into the gas chromatography for analysis without any second cryotrap or secondary condensation.
