Morbidity and mortality of diabetes mellitus in Khartoum Teaching Hospital

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease in Sudan. It is a cause of major morbidity and mortality, because of its acute and chronic complications. This study was done in KTH. 150 patients were selected from medical, surgical paediatrics and obstetrics wards. The objectives of this study were to assess the pattern of presentation of diabetic patients, complications of the disease and the treatment and evaluate the outcome after treatment. Major symptoms were those of hyperglycaemia and diabetic complications. Polyurea 53%, polydipsia 35.3%, vomiting 26.7% of patients, Peripheral neuropathy was found in 26.7% of patients, retinopathy in 20% of patients. F.B.S was high in 94% of patients, 2hrsPP blood sugar was high in 96.7% of patients. Mortality rate was found to be 6.7%. The most common presentation of diabetic patients in KTH was ketoacidosis followed by uncontrolled D.M and diabetic septic foot. Long disease duration and high blood sugar were associated with development of the complications
