The Prevalence of Denture-related Oral Mucosal Lesions at Khartoum State Hospitals. ( June- November 2005).

Oral health survey data are essential for governmental decisions about dental care and preventive programs. Oral prevalence studies are important to know the state of health and the needs for treatment. The goals of this study were to obtain base line information on the prevalence of denture-related oral lesions in an elderly Sudanese population sample and to investigate differences in the presentation of these findings in relation to gender, subject's age, age of the denture, denture hygiene, denture condition, tombac and smoking habits. Hundred complete denture wearers, more than forty years old were interviewed and subjected to oral examination. The overall prevalence of denture-related oral lesions was found to be 33%. A significant relation was found between denture-related oral lesions and subject's age. However, no significant relation was detected between these lesions and gender. The data obtained from the study suggests a greater association between denture-related lesions and denture age and denture hygiene. IV Also there was an association between denture-related lesions and defective dentures. In the present study no significant association was found between denture-related lesions and smoking or tombac usage. The current study in Sudanese population supports the studies of other populations, and revealed quite similar results to these studies.
