Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes, causes over 300 million episodes of “acute illness” and more than one million deaths annually. The direct individual economic impacts of the disease include the value of lives lost, the value of time lost to sickness, and the expenditures on medical care, treatment, and prevention. Direct social costs include government expenditures on malaria control and prevention. In Sudan, there are 7.5 million cases and 35.000 deaths every year due to malaria. Whilst the whole population is at risk from the disease, there is higher incidence among pregnant women and children under five years of age.
