Sudan Development Plans and Food Security, from 1899 through 1993

This paper reviews Sudan development plans from 1899 through 1990 in relation to food security in order to decide on whether they have worked or not to achieve food security nationally, regionally and locally for the population. Data is provided by Sudan Development Programs and Plans from 1899 to 1990 published by Minf~stry of Finance and Economic Planning. Results depict that food insecun`ty is more emphasized into the traditional agricultural sector. The irrigated sector is somehow producing for export and to feed urban population of Sudan. Development Plans of Sudan seem to be alienated from geographic realities and are mostly theoretically formulated on economic base solely~ Condominium and Post Independence Sudan continued to neglect traditional agricultural sector which supports the majority of the country's population. From this sector emerged food insecure groups and the military rebellions. The paper comes to conclude that unless Sudan planning for development works towards considen`ng geographic diversity of place and people, it will continue facing food unavailability, inaccessibility and unaffordability among its growing population, as well as threatens to its future political unity
