In the Yucheng region along the lower reach of the Yellow River, current border irrigation systems in all three irrigation districts have low irrigation performances with the applied depth per irrigation event > 150 mm, and application efficiency < 65 %. It is often difficult to change irrigation practices, and rates of adoption are usually slow for China's small-scale farmers. This study emphasizes the feasibility of optimizing border dimensions in border irrigation taking into consideration the existing irrigation conditions and farmers' methods of irrigation practice.
