Book review: Harvey, Ross, Digital curation: A how-to-do-it manual.

Review of a pioneering work, presented as “the first one-stop resource in digital curation.” The chapters on appraisal/selection, preservation, and storage are the most substantial, but the treatment of all key activities in the curation lifecycle is thorough and clear. Concludes that the book provides an excellent step-by-step guide to a vital new area of practice. Although dealing with technical issues, it is written in straightforward, non-technical language and does not assume a high level of technological knowledge. One key message is that organizational, legal, political, and social issues are crucially important to success in the digital curation field. The manual will be useful not just to students and practitioners at the sharp end of operations, but also to senior staff with policy and strategy roles, as well as academics and educators in the field and those with responsibility for workforce development.
