In the mammalian nervous system, SK channels function to regulate neuronal excitability through the generation of a component of the afterhyperpolarization that follows action potentials. In humans, irregular action potential firing frequency underlies diseases such as ataxia, epilepsy, schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease.
