Huntington’s disease (HD) is a hereditary condition that affects the brain and nervous system. The gene associated with HD was identified in 1993 and was one of the first conditions for which presymptomatic testing became available, allowing individuals to know that they will develop this disease in the future. Genetic counselors provide information about HD to individuals along with the necessary support to cope with this knowledge. Peer-to-peer programs have been widely successful in helping individuals cope with various medical conditions, but have not been applied to the HD community.
