Background: Breast cancer is a worldwide public health concern. Breast cancer now ranks first not only in the industrialized world but also in the developing world. In the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. In the past fifty years, a woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer more than tripled in the United States, to one in seven today. This trend parallels a staggering increase of chemicals in the environment.
