It has been estimated that approximately 375,000 people experience knee injuries every year in the United States. The majority of the pathologies affect the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL). Thus, a thorough characterization of the mechanical properties of the ligaments is needed to understand the etiology of their injuries and to improve the strategies of their treatment.
