Estimation de la biomasse forestière et caractérisation de la structure verticale des peuplements de conifères par radar VHF et radar sondeurs aéroportés

Interest about monitoring and predicting the evolution of forest resource has considerably increased these last years, notably to supervise and predict the impact of the growing anthropogenic pressures on forest ecosystems. These efforts require a better characterisation of the forest covers. Microwave remote sensing ("radar" remote sensing) appears as a powerful tool for these problems, considering the sensitivity of microwaves to the biophysical properties of the forests. However, retrieving variables of interest linked to forest covers, using current radar spatial sensors, is not sufficiently reliable. This thesis aims at carry on with previous works on radar remote sensing of forests, focusing on the potential of originals airborne sensors. This is, using an approach starting from the experimental analysis of the data, supported by theoretical modelling of microwave interaction with forest media, towards the development of semi-empirical retrieval algorithms. The two test-sites are composed of monospecific plantations of Maritime pine and Austrian pine. A great amount of forests measurements are available, and integrated, for one site, in a GIS. The first sensor under study is a helicopter borne, non-imaging, ranging scatterometer, HUTSCAT, which gives backscattering profiles inside tree canopy with a vertical resolution of 68 cm at two wavelengths (X-band : 3 cm and C-band : 5,6 cm). The second sensor is an imaging airborne SAR operating at VHF frequencies (20-90 MHz, wavelengths of 3 to 15 m). For the interpretation of the data, two models were used : a radiative transfer model (RT) simulating only the propagation of the energy, and a coherent model, describing the propagation of the electric field (both amplitude and phase of the microwave). These models require a precise description of the geometry of the trees, difficult to obtain through ground measurements, even more necessary when the task is to model high resolution remote sensing data. This precise description is given by the architectural plant model AMAP (Atelier de Modélisation Architectural de Plantes du CIRAD). Results of the experimental analysis of HUTSCAT show that the height of the trees can be estimated with an absolute accuracy of about 1 m. From these estimations, others variables of interest can also be retrieved : stem volume, site index. CARABAS radar backscattering coefficient is found to be closely related to forest variables in a large range of stem volume values : up to 900 m3/ha. The signal is strongly correlated to the trunks geometric characteristics (diameter, height, volume) and the relations of the backscatter versus stem volume appear to be very close between both sites. A strong dependence to the topography (slope) is also observed. For the derivation of biomass retrieval algorithms, it would be necessary to develop a semi- empirical correction. Interpretation of HUTSCAT vertical backscatter profiles requires a model that can accommodate the vertical variability of the canopy. The RT model, coupled with AMAP, is appropriate because it describes the vegetation as a superposition of horizontal and infinite layers. Results of simulation demonstrate that the infinite layers assumption is not valid at shallow incidence angles and a correction is proposed taking into account the shape of the tree crowns. From there, comparisons of simulated and experimental profiles show a good agreement. The model show that the needles are by far the main scatterers. These simulations prove, at centimetric wavelengths and for low incidence angles, that all the part of the canopy contribute to the signal measured by the sensor. Based on these conclusions, a retrieval algorithm of the foliage distribution within tree canopy is developed and validated using ground measurements. Theoretical study of CARABAS data is conduced using the coherent model in order to take into account coherent interactions between scattering mechanisms such as double bounce scatterings between the ground and the vegetation. For both species, result show that the trunk is the main scatterer and the branches contribute lowly to the total signal. The decrease of the backscatter as a function of the topography is explained by the loss of the preponderant scattering mechanism (bistatic trunk-ground reflection) as the slope increases. We conclude that for species presenting a trunk larger compared to all other vegetation elements (in terms of volume), as for the coniferous, the measured backscatter will be strongly correlated to the stem volume and little variation will be observed between species. These observations demonstrate that using metric wavelengths allow to diminish the impact of the tree species and the forest complexity. All the presented results show the interest and the complementarity of airborne sensors working at high resolution and at both edges of the radar spectra (X-band and VHF). Even if these sensors configurations cannot be applied to satellites in a near future due to technical difficulties, these data will be of great interest for forest managers to monitor and predict the evolutions of forest resource at local to regional scales.Les préoccupations liées à l'estimation et au suivi de la ressource forestière se sont considérablement accrues ces dernières années, notamment afin de surveiller et de prévoir l'impact d'une pression anthropique croissante sur les écosystèmes forestiers. Ces efforts nécessitent une meilleure caractérisation des couverts forestiers. La télédétection micro-ondes active (télédétection " radar ") apparaît comme un outil adapté à ces préoccupations, par la sensibilité des ondes radar aux caractéristiques biophysiques des couverts. Pourtant, l'inversion de variables d'intérêts descriptives des couverts, à partir des capteurs radar spatiaux actuels, reste limitée. Cette thèse se propose de poursuivre les travaux menés dans le domaine de la télédétection radar appliquée à l'étude des forêts, en étudiant le potentiel de nouveaux capteurs radar aéroportés présentant des configurations originales. Une approche complète est mise en oeuvre, allant de l'analyse expérimentale, supportée par l'interprétation de modèles de diffusion électromagnétique des couverts forestiers, jusqu'au développement d'algorithmes d'inversions semi-empiriques. Les sites test sont deux plantations monospécifiques, de pin maritime et de pin noir d'Autriche, pour lesquelles de nombreuses données terrain sont disponibles, et intégrées dans un SIG pour la seconde forêt. Le premier capteur étudié est un diffusiomètre héliporté non-imageur, HUTSCAT, qui sonde le couvert à deux longueurs d'onde (bande X : 2,1 cm et bande C : 5,6 cm) et génère des profils verticaux de rétrodiffusion à une résolution verticale de 68 cm. Le second capteur, CASABAS, est un système imageur aéroporté SAR, travaillant aux fréquences VHF (20-90 MHz, longueurs d'onde de 3 à 15 mètres). Pour l'interprétation des données, deux types de modèles de diffusion électromagnétique sont utilisés : un modèle de transfert radiatif (RT) reposant sur une formulation énergétique où seule l'intensité du signal est simulée, et un modèle cohérent, simulant la propagation du champ électrique (amplitude et phase de l'onde). Ces modèles nécessitent une description géométrique précise du couvert, difficile à obtenir par des mesures terrain, d'autant plus nécessaire lorsque l'on désire modéliser des données haute résolution. Cette description fine est fournie par le modèle architectural AMAP (Atelier de Modélisation Architectural de Plantes du CIRAD). Les résultats expérimentaux obtenus avec HUTSCAT montrent que l'on peut estimer la hauteur des arbres avec une précision absolue de l'ordre du mètre. De ces estimations, d'autres variables d'intérêt peuvent être également obtenues : volume de bois sur pied, indice de fertilité local. Le coefficient de rétrodiffusion mesuré par CARABAS montre une forte sensibilité aux variables du couvert sans saturation sur des gammes de volume de bois sur pied allant jusqu'à 900 m3/ha. Le signal est fortement corrélé aux caractéristiques géométriques des fûts (diamètre, hauteur et volume) et les relations en fonction du volume de bois sur pied sont très proches entre les deux sites. Une forte dépendance du signal à la topographie est observée. Pour une inversion du signal en terrain accidenté, une correction semi-empirique de cet effet serait nécessaire. L'interprétation des profils verticaux fournis par HUTSCAT nécessite l'utilisation d'un modèle capable de prendre en compte la variabilité verticale du couvert. Le modèle RT, couplé à AMAP, s'avère approprié car il décrit les houppiers par une superposition de couches horizontales infinies. Les résultats de simulations montrent cependant la faiblesse de l'hypothèse des couches infinies, pour de faibles incidences, et une correction prenant en compte la forme des houppiers est introduite, pour reproduire correctement les profils expérimentaux. Le modèle montre que les aiguilles sont les principaux diffuseurs. Ces simulations prouvent qu'aux longueurs d'onde centimétriques toutes les parties du houppier contribuent à la réponse finale mesurée par le capteur. A partir de ces conclusions, un algorithme d'inversion visant à estimer la répartition de la biomasse foliaire à l'intérieur des houppiers est proposé et validé grâce à des mesures terrain. L'étude des données CARABAS nécessite d'utiliser le modèle cohérent afin de prendre en compte les interactions cohérentes entre les différents mécanismes de diffusion (réflexions bistatiques sol-végétation). Pour les deux espèces de conifères étudiées, le tronc est le principal diffuseur et les branches ne contribuent que faiblement. La sensibilité observée du signal à la topographie est expliquée par la chute de la réflexion dihédrale tronc-sol à mesure que la pente locale augmente. Il est conclu que pour des espèces présentant un tronc prédominant en terme de volume par rapport aux autres éléments du couvert, le signal sera fortement corrélé au volume de bois sur pied et peu variable d'une espèce à l'autre. Ces observations démontrent la possibilité de s'affranchir d'une grande partie de la variabilité du milieu et des effets de structure des arbres en utilisant des longueurs d'onde métriques. L'ensemble des résultats prouve l'intérêt et la complémentarité des capteurs haute résolution et travaillant aux deux extrémités du spectre (X et VHF) utilisé en télédétection radar pour l'étude des forêts. Si de telles configurations techniques sont actuellement inenvisageables à bord de satellites, ces données aéroportées peuvent néanmoins s'avérer d'un grand intérêt pour le suivi et une gestion fine de la ressource forestière
