Seismic rupture dynamics can be highly dependent on the heterogeneity of faults, modelised by heterogeneity of the friction properties. We address this issue both numericaly and experimentaly. In the numerical study, we study the effects of small scale heterogeneity in 3D dynamic rupture modeling. We develop an homogenizing technique that allows to reproduce the effects of small scale hetereogeneity during the initiation phase, and for simple examples, during the propagation phase of the rupture. We then present a new experimental technique for laboratory study of rupture propagation.
