We are compiling a list of anticipated target spot sizes that are specified by the NIF users groups. This data will be used to anticipate demands for phase plates. The spot size also has an impact on the laser operation. Presently the phase plates are designed to sit in the leo section of the FOA (before the conversion crystals). Intensity modulations produced by the phase plates are nonlinearly proportional to the laser spot size. For spot sizes above 3 mm diameter, the intensity modulations are large enough that the damage threshold for the remainder of the FOA is exceeded.
