The GEO-SEQ Project is investigating methods for geological sequestration of CO{sub 2}. This project, which is directed by LBNL and includes a number of other industrial, university, and National Laboratory partners, is evaluating computer simulation models including TOUGH2. One of the problems to be considered is Enhanced Coal Bed Methane (ECBM) recovery. In this scenario, CO2 is pumped into methane-rich coal beds. Due to adsorption processes, the CO2 is sorbed onto the coal, which displaces the previously sorbed methane (CH4). The released methane can then be recovered, at least partially offsetting the cost of CO2 sequestration.
