In this paper we examine the elastic moduli, during tensile loading, of textured and untextured Nitronic 40 stainless steel. In-situ neutron diffraction experiments were performed at the LANSCE pulsed neutron source. The stress-strain response of various hkl planes are reported, and compared with predictions from a self-consistent elasto-plastic model. Residual strain predictions from the model after plastic loading to 1% strain, are compared with experimental results for the untextured specimen. The implications for diffraction residual stress measurements are considered
