Irradiation of polymeric materials with energetic ions in the range of several hundreds of keV to several MeV causes drastic changes in physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Studies indicate that irradiation produces many active radicals which then react with each other, transforming spaghetti-like tangled polymer chains into a highly cross-linked network structure.
