A Study on the Effects of Obstructive Jaundice on Rat Pancreatic Exocrine and Endocrine Function (1) Changes in Pancreatic Exocrine and Endocrine Functions and Changes Following Release from Jaundice in vivo

Changes of exocrine and endocrine pancreatic functions with obstructive jaundice and changes following release of obstructive jaundice were studied in rats biochemically. Plasma secretin and gastrin concentrations in jaundiced rat were higher than those in control. Plasma cholecystokinin (CCK) concentration at 3 and 7 days after ligation of the common bile duct (OJ3D and OJ7D, respectively) was higher than in control, whereas at 14 days and 28 days after ligation of the common bile ducts (OJ14D and OJ28D, respectively), CCK concentration was unaltered. Amylase activity per pancreas wet weight (p.w.w.) and protein content per DNA in the pancreatic tissue increased in the OJ3D and OJ7D groups. DNA content per p.w.w. in the pancreatic tissue increased in the OJ7D group, but decreased in the OJ28D group. These findings suggest that DNA synthesis and protein synthesis in acinar cells increased for 3-7 days after ligation of the common bile duct, but decreased at 28 days after ligation. These changes mostly returned to those of control within 3-14 days by releasing bile juice into the upper jejunum. In the B-cells of islet, there was no evidence of increasing IRI for 3-14 days after ligation of the common bile duct, while a low reaction of serum IRI under i.v. GTT and a decrease of tissue IRI concentration were observed at 28 days after ligation of the common bile duct
