Factores de elección de universidad pública en la Comunidad Valenciana

This thesis addresses two large blocks of objectives: the analysis of the factors of choice public university in Valencia and modeling of these processes of choice.These aims are divided, in turn, in research areas: analysis of the underlying motivation to undertake university studies, analysis of the factors influencing the choice of university and degree, the sources of information used by the and students and the influence of third parties in this process, as well as the reasons why the student ultimately chooses the university and the degree in which he was admitted;and choice modeling using binomial logistic regression models and artificial neural networks, in particular multilayer perceptron models (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF). To achieve the goals defined, this thesis consists of a total of six empirical studies that have been organized in three trials in a thesis that is divided into three parts and consists of seven chapters. In terms of methodological design, the thesis develops a phase of qualitative research and two phases of quantitative research.The first quantitative research work took place in FormaEmple@ 2010 developing 401 enterviews to 4th year secondary school students. The second quantitative research was developed in 2013, using a sample composed by students admitted in Valencian Public Universities, respecting quotas by university, and within each institution, quotas of campus, branch knowledge and gender. The results of this thesis are consistent with research conducted at the international level, and their contributions can be grouped into three main categories: academic, methodological and management.From an academic perspective it addresses the college selection process from a marketing perspective educational approaches aligned with establishing a parallel with the election processes in the context of consumer behavior, addressing the different stages of the student's choice. From a methodological perspective, this thesis employs techniques of univariate and multivariate analysis, and analysis techniques such as advanced data binomial logistic regressions and artificial neural networks. From a management perspective, the implications of this thesis can be extended both the universities and the education system as a whole, as policy-makers.La tesis aborda dos grandes bloques de objetivos: el análisis de los factores de elección de universidad pública en la Comunidad Valenciana y la modelización de estos procesos de elección. Estos bloques de objetivos se dividen, a su vez, en áreas de investigación: por una parte el análisis de la motivación subyacente para emprender estudios universitarios, el análisis de los factores de elección de universidad y de titulación, las fuentes de información empleadas por las y los estudiantes y la influencia de terceras personas en este proceso, así como los motivos por los que el estudiante finalmente elige la universidad y la titulación en que fue admitido; por otra parte se persigue la modelización de la elección empleando regresiones logísticas binomiales y modelos de redes neuronales artificiales, en concreto modelos perceptrón multicapa (MLP) y de función de base radial (RBF). Para alcanzar estos bloques de objetivos, esta tesis consta de un total de seis estudios empíricos que han sido organizados en tres ensayos en una tesis que se articula en tres partes y consta de siete capítulos. En el diseño metodológico, la tesis se desarrolla a partir de una fase de investigación cualitativa y dos fases de tipo cuantitativo. El primero de estos trabajos cuantitativos se desarrolló en la feria de muestras FormaEmple@ en 2010 y cuenta con un total de 401 cuestionarios válidos realizados a estudiantes de cuarto curso de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, mientras que el segundo de los trabajos de campo se desarrolló en 2013 entre las y los estudiantes admitidos en universidades públicas valencianas, respetando cuotas de universidad, y dentro de cada institución, cuotas de campus, de rama de conocimiento y de género. Los resultados de esta tesis son consistentes con las investigaciones desarrolladas a nivel internacional, y sus contribuciones se pueden agrupar en tres grandes bloques: académicas, metodológicas y de gestión. Desde una perspectiva académica aborda el proceso de elección de universidad desde una perspectiva de marketing educativo alineada con los enfoques que establecen un paralelismo con los procesos de elección en el marco del comportamiento del consumidor, abordando las diferentes etapas del proceso de elección del estudiante. Desde una perspectiva metodológica, esta tesis emplea técnicas de análisis univariante y multivariante, así como técnicas de análisis de datos avanzadas como son las regresiones logísticas binomiales y las redes neuronales artificiales. Desde una perspectiva de gestión, las implicaciones de esta tesis se pueden extender tanto a las instituciones universitarias como al sistema educativo en su conjunto, como a los policy-makers
