Textual structure and aphasia

La bibliografía sobre lenguaje y daño cerebral investiga cómo los hablantes que sufren de daño cerebral, tanto los que tienen afasia como lo que tienen lesión en el hemisferio derecho, construyen sus textos, con especial atención a las estructuras narrativas. El uso de un grupo de grabaciones de hablantes afásicos perteneciente al corpus PerLA (Percepción, lenguaje y afasia), se analiza para ver cómo estos hablantes formulan y desarrollan los textos narrativos. Analizamos cómo se adaptan las partes principales de un texto en términos de relevancia cognitiva. Utilizamos las nociones de prototipicidad e iconicidad sintàctica para la explicación de algunas de las características tradicionalmente asociadas con agramatismo , como ocurre por ejemplo, con la elección de los temas gramaticales (tema/rema) o la pérdida de información . Los textos narrativos de hablantes afásicos muestran indicios de la alteración de las superestructuras narrativas, así como la existencia de los tres niveles informativos (descriptivo, agentivo y de evaluación ); por último, los errores de cohesión y coherencia manifiestan la interdependencia entre gramática y pragmática , y se pueden explicar mediante teorías de lingüística cognitiva.Background: The bibliography on language and brain damage investigates how speakers suffering from brain damage, both those with aphasic damage and those damaged in the right cerebral hemisphere, construct their texts, paying special attention to the narrative outlines. Aims and Methods: Using a collection of recordings of speakers with aphasic damage from the group PerLa (Perception, Language and Aphasia), we analyse how these speakers formulate texts and develop texts on a more general level. We analyse how they adapt the core parts of a text, but also how appropriate the different elements of the text are in terms of cognitive relevance, by using the notions of prototypicality and the syntactic iconicity; we believe that both concepts are highly relevant for the explanation of some characteristics traditionally associated with agrammatism, such as occurs for example with the choice of grammatical subjects or the loss of information. Conclusions: Aphasic narrative text show evidence of the handling of narrative superstructures and of the presence of the three informative levels (descriptive, agentive and evaluative); cohesion and coherence errors manifest the interdependence between grammar and pragmatics, and can be explained with cognitive linguistic theories
