In this study, we examined the association between English language usage (one of the indicators of acculturation) and smoking in a representative sample of adolescents in California. We hypothesized that (a) English language usage would be associated with increased risk of smoking among Hispanic and Asian American adolescents and (b) this association would be mediated by differences in smoking-related psychosocial variables, such as perceived access to cigarettes, perceived consequences of smoking, prevalence estimates of smoking among peers, friends\u27 smoking, cigarette offers, and cigarette refusal self-efficacy
